The New Lexicon I.

Philosophy of Music Technology [research group]

WORKING METHOD

The residency is organized around sustained exchange rather than one-directional instruction. Participants bring practices and projects already situated within particular histories, technical environments, disciplines, and questions. The task of the group is to create conditions under which those projects can be examined with rigour, generosity, and conceptual precision.

Presentation and discussion may engage compositions, performances, instruments, interfaces, software, code, recordings, installations, diagrams, essays, lectures, datasets, prototypes, documentation, or hybrid forms. No single medium is treated as the default form of evidence, and technical complexity is not equated with artistic or intellectual significance. Materials are considered according to the questions they raise, the relations they organize, and the kinds of understanding they make possible.

Participants will be encouraged to define their terms, identify assumptions embedded in tools and workflows, clarify the relation between conceptual propositions and technical decisions, and distinguish intended functions from actual effects. Discussion will attend not only to what a project claims to enable, but also to how its premises are embodied in interfaces, code, materials, standards, modes of presentation, maintenance requirements, and conditions of reception.

Criticality is understood as a constructive practice. Feedback should not merely affirm a project, celebrate novelty, or measure it against external technical norms. It should reveal the consequences of its choices, identify tensions between claims and operations, locate unexamined dependencies, and open viable paths for development. Participants will be asked to respond to others with the same seriousness they expect for their own work.

The inquiry is intentionally plural. Its purpose is not to establish technical consensus, prescribe adherence to a single philosophical tradition, or subordinate artistic practice to theoretical explanation. Productive disagreement, methodological difference, and conceptual tension are necessary conditions of collective research. The programme seeks a discourse in which incompatible positions can be stated clearly, examined fairly, and developed through encounter.
